Cafayate - Capital of white wines
26/01/2006 - After a stopover at the Prisamata hostel in Salta, it’s the time to start our southern tour. 150 minutes of pure pleasure of driving through the mountains. Everytime we think we’ve seen it all, a new type of mountain comes up, in a different shape or colour. Argentina seems to be what you can find in the rest of the world, but in just 1 country. Cafayate is a popular destination among argentinians. It has a decent size but is not too big. It has a very relaxed athmosphere but still enough life or nightlife not to feel lost. It reminds me of cities in the southern part of France, with wineyards etc. We were recommended to go to the El Hospedaje. We are once again not disappointed. The owners have inherited a big mansion from their parents and have transformed it into a hostel. It has a pool, a patio and breakfast included. Owners seem to be cold but once you talk to them, they are quite friendly. Our canadian friend leaves us here. We spend the rest of the evening walking in the city, spending time in the main square. What’s typical of Argentinian cities is their main square. It’s the place where they all gather at night to decide where to party or have a drink, play music together or just talk. Tomorrow we’ll go and see Quilmes ruins.
