Las Salinas Grandes - More than just salt
25/01/2006 - We left jujuy early the next morning. And daylight confirmed what we expected. San Salvador de Jujuy is not a pretty city. We head back towards Purmamarca to take the road the Las Salinas Grandes. After 2 hours and a road that would make anyone sitting in the back seat sick like hell, we reach the salty swamps. Although not as impressive as what we have seen so far, it’s definitely worth a visit. Everything is made of salt in the area. There is a house built in salt, with tables and chairs made of salt. Interesting. An hour later, we take a dirt road towards San Antonio de los Cobres. I think we can call it the Donkey Road. There are wild donkeys everywhere. And another interesting fact is that donkeys seems to live in perfect harmony with …. LAMAS!!! Yihaaa. Our first wild lamas. They don’t seem to care about us. They just eat. 45 minutes later, we get to San Antonio de los Cobres. It’s a ghost town. It must be tough to live here. We fill in our tank and head to … chile!!! Postsigns are just terrible in Argentina…
The road between San Martin de los Cobres and Salta is marvelous. Old rail tracks, old bridges, green mountains… Back to Salta for 1 night. Tomorrow, Cafayate and the white wines.
