2 hours of drive in a minibus with 12 compañeros to El Manso in the heart of the Cordillera de los Andes, at the border of Chile. The river is a level 3 (levels up to 5). Not supposed to be difficult but with tricky parts. With the confidence of a past experience on the Colorado river, we get on the raft with our guide. We get 20 minutes to learn the basics: Forward, backward, jump left, jump right, everyone middle. Piece of cake. But we are not in the rapids yet. We have time to enjoy the fact that we are rafting in the heart of the Andes. First rapids called Bienvenida, no problem. It gets a bit more difficult but we manage to made it through the latest rapids area without any major hassle, but first alert, i almost had my butt in the water. Manu (my buddy) was there to save my arse. Now that’s when the real story begins. 3 rafts in front of us reach the latest rapids area. The first one flips over completely, the second one as well, the 3rd one just keeps 2 brave marines on board. But my rafts mates and I stay focussed on our task. Full of faith in our abilities to survive this evil river, we head towards what appears to be the climax of our adventure. We enter the rapids, cheering ourselves up. But we quickly realize we are not gonna make it. We are now facing the gigantic wave and in a matter of seconds, our raft is no more. I´m now under the cold water trying to find a way out. That´s it, I´m breathing again. I realize my mates are all over the placer trying to get back to the raft. It took us about 5 minutes to get together again. What a blast. We come back to the camp for an Asado (Barbecue) and on the Menu: Lamb, beef, chorizo. Great day. Great memories already. Very tired but damn happy!
